The Google Tensor G3 SoC is generating significant anticipation as it is expected to bring substantial improvements to the Pixel 8 series of smartphones. Although the information about the Tensor G3 is based on leaks and rumors, it provides insights into the potential enhancements this chipset could offer.

Google Tensor

One of the key advancements of the Tensor G3 is the reported increase in CPU cores. While its predecessor, the Tensor G2, featured a 4+2+2 core layout, the Tensor G3 is rumored to adopt a 1+4+4 configuration, totaling nine CPU cores. This architecture indicates a significant reworking of the CPU block, utilizing the ARMv9 cores from 2022. The CPU arrangement is expected to consist of a single Cortex-X3 core running at 3.00GHz for high-performance tasks, four Cortex-A715 cores with a default frequency of 2.45GHz for balanced performance, and four Cortex-A510 cores operating at a frequency of 2.15GHz for power efficiency. These improvements suggest a substantial boost in processing power, which can enhance overall device performance and user experience.

Another noteworthy enhancement in the Tensor G3 is its potential GPU upgrade. The chipset is rumored to feature an ARM Mali-G715 GPU with 10 cores, operating at a frequency of 890MHz. This represents a significant improvement over the previous generation's seven-core Mali-G710 graphics unit. The upgraded GPU can deliver better graphics rendering, improved gaming performance, and enhanced visual experiences.

An exciting aspect of the Tensor G3 is its rumored support for AV1 encoding, making it the first smartphone SoC to offer this capability. AV1 is a video codec that provides superior compression efficiency, enabling high-quality video streaming at lower bandwidth requirements. If true, this feature can enhance video playback, streaming, and content creation experiences on the Pixel 8 series.

Tensor

In addition to the CPU and GPU improvements, the Tensor G3 is expected to introduce a new version of the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), codenamed "Rio." The TPU is a specialized chip designed to accelerate AI-related tasks, such as machine learning and neural network computations. The reported increase in TPU speed from 1.0GHz in the Tensor G2 to 1.1GHz in the Tensor G3 suggests enhanced AI performance and capabilities.

Furthermore, the Tensor G3 may feature a second-generation digital signal processor (DSP) or GXP with the codename "Callisto." The DSP plays a crucial role in various audio and multimedia processing tasks, contributing to improved audio quality, voice recognition, and other signal processing functionalities.

The potential inclusion of a new version of Samsung's UFS controller, supporting UFS 4.0 storage, is another noteworthy feature. UFS 4.0 offers faster data transfer rates, improved power efficiency, and higher storage capacities compared to previous generations. This advancement can contribute to faster app loading times, smoother multitasking, and increased storage capacity for users.

It's important to note that these specifications are based on leaks and rumors, and the final specifications may differ when the Pixel 8 series and the Tensor G3 SoC are officially announced. Therefore, it's advisable to wait for official confirmation from Google to obtain accurate and detailed information about the Tensor G3's capabilities.
