Xiaomi is expanding its smart home brand Mijia in India, starting with air purifiers as its first product category. This move marks a significant step in the company’s strategy to strengthen its presence in the Indian home appliance market. Xiaomi India COO Sudhin Mathur confirmed the launch in an exclusive interview, highlighting the company's plan to gradually introduce more Mijia products, including smart refrigerators and washing machines, over time.
Mijia, which translates to "Mi Home" or "Xiaomi Home," is already a well-established brand in China, offering a wide range of smart home appliances. Xiaomi aims to replicate this success in India, leveraging its existing base of millions of smartphone users. The company completed 12 years in India this July and has become a household name, particularly in the mobile phone segment.
Sudhin Mathur explained that Xiaomi’s next phase in India focuses on building a connected ecosystem. The company’s "Human x Car x Home" vision involves integrating smartphones, tablets, wearables, smart TVs, and AIoT products with home appliances. Xiaomi plans to accelerate its connected ecosystem strategy in India, aligning with its global portfolio.
Mathur emphasized that all Mijia products launched in India will be part of a smart home ecosystem. Users will be able to control these appliances through their smartphones, enabling features such as automated lighting and scheduled cleaning by robotic vacuum cleaners. Xiaomi’s goal is to make smart technology accessible and affordable for Indian consumers.
Xiaomi has developed a robust logistics and service network in India, which Mathur believes will support the rollout of Mijia products. The company operates over 1,300 service centres, covering more than 19,300 pin codes. This infrastructure is expected to help Xiaomi compete with established home appliance brands like Samsung and LG.
Despite these preparations, the Indian home appliance market presents unique challenges. Logistics and after-sales service are critical factors, and Xiaomi’s experience with selling large appliances such as TVs in India provides some confidence. However, the brand’s success will depend on how well it can deliver value and service to consumers.
During the interview, Mathur also addressed the current challenges in the smartphone industry. Rising component prices have forced all brands, including Xiaomi, to increase prices for phones, laptops, and tablets. Devices that use chips, memory, or storage have seen significant price hikes. Products that previously cost Rs 20,000 now often exceed Rs 30,000.
Mathur acknowledged that these market conditions are likely to persist. He stated that Xiaomi aims to remain resilient and is not the first to raise prices, but further increases cannot be ruled out. The company continues to plan for the launch of more premium smartphones in India in the coming months, despite these challenges.
As Xiaomi introduces Mijia to the Indian market, it will focus on offering smart, connected appliances at accessible prices. The company’s strategy relies on its established logistics network and its experience in the Indian market. The coming months will reveal how Indian consumers respond to Xiaomi’s expanded product lineup.
