Google Assistant to Be Replaced by Gemini Starting September 4
Google will begin replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on eligible Android devices, smartwatches, and headphones in a phased rollout starting September 4.

Google has confirmed it will begin phasing out Google Assistant from eligible Android devices starting September 4. The company is notifying users by email, marking the first time it has provided a specific date for the transition. Gemini, Google's next-generation AI assistant, will take over as the default assistant on supported devices.

Key Highlights

  • Google Assistant will begin disappearing from eligible Android devices starting September 4.
  • Gemini will become the default AI assistant on supported Android phones and other devices.
  • The transition will occur in phases and affect smartwatches, headphones, and Android Auto sessions.
  • Some devices, such as cars with Google built-in, will keep Google Assistant for now.

Gemini to Replace Google Assistant

Once the update reaches a device, users will no longer be able to access Google Assistant or revert to it. Instead, activating the assistant—by saying "Hey Google" or pressing the power button—will launch Gemini. The rollout will happen in phases over several weeks, with timing depending on device, country, and language.

Google Assistant, introduced in 2016, has been a core feature on Android phones, smart speakers, TVs, smartwatches, and other devices for nearly a decade. The company had previously announced Gemini would eventually replace Assistant, but the new emails confirm the transition is imminent.

Transition Timeline and Device Impact

Earlier, Google stated that Assistant would remain available on Android until March 2026, after initially planning to phase it out by the end of 2025. The new plan will see Google Assistant removed from eligible Android devices starting September 4, with the process continuing over several weeks.

The change is not limited to smartphones. If users have Gemini set as their mobile assistant, it will also become the assistant on compatible Wear OS smartwatches and supported headphones or earbuds. Android Auto sessions projected from a smartphone will also switch to Gemini. However, some devices will continue using Google Assistant for now. Cars with Google built-in are expected to keep Assistant beyond September 4.

Other Devices and Future Plans

Google has confirmed Gemini will eventually come to Google TV devices, Google Home smart speakers, and smart displays, but has not provided a timeline. The company has not clarified when the docked Pixel Tablet will transition to Gemini. Google has updated its Assistant support pages with a banner stating that Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices.

Gemini offers many of the same features as Google Assistant, with added natural conversation abilities and advanced AI capabilities. For now, Google Assistant will continue to work on devices that do not support Gemini and in regions where Gemini is not available. For eligible users, the transition to Gemini will begin on September 4.
