Huawei has introduced the Pura X Max, a new foldable phone that expands on its earlier foldable designs. The Pura X Max features a 5.4-inch cover display and a 7.7-inch internal display, making it larger than the original Pura X. This model adopts a book-style foldable format with a nearly square inner screen, offering a resolution of 2,584 x 1,828 pixels. The outer display measures 1,848 x 1,264 pixels, with both screens supporting 1-120Hz LTPO 2.0 refresh rates and 1,440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming.
The Pura X Max supports the Huawei M-Pen 3 Mini stylus, designed to match the device's reduced height. The stylus works with a specially-designed case, and there is also a case featuring a magnetic flip-out stand. The device is powered by the Kirin 9030 Pro chipset, which offers a 30% performance improvement over the Kirin 9020 found in the previous Pura X. The chipset uses a combination of a vapor chamber and graphene sheet for cooling.
The battery in the Pura X Max has a capacity of 5,300mAh, up from 4,720mAh in the Pura X. It supports 66W wired and 50W wireless SuperCharge. The phone runs HarmonyOS 6.1, as Huawei no longer uses Android. The frame is made from aluminum alloy, and the device now offers improved dust and water resistance, moving from IPX8 on the Pura X to IP58/IP59 on the X Max. The outer display is protected by second-generation Kunlun glass.
The main camera system features a 50MP sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a variable aperture ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0. There is also a 50MP periscope camera with an f/2.2 lens and OIS, as well as a 12.5MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 aperture. All three cameras use RYYB sensors, which replace the green sub-pixel with yellow for improved light sensitivity. The device includes two 8MP selfie cameras, one on each display, primarily for video calls. Users can also take selfies with the main camera for higher image quality.
The camera system uses Huawei’s XMAGE image processing and a second-generation color sensor. This marks an upgrade over the Pura X, which had a 50MP main camera with a fixed f/1.6 aperture, an 8MP telephoto, and a 40MP ultra-wide camera. The increased resolution and variable aperture are expected to enhance zoom and image quality.
The Huawei Pura X Max launches in China today and is available in several color options. Pricing details have been provided in local currency, with conversions to USD. There is no confirmation yet on international availability for this model.
