The study focused on detecting vasovagal syncope (VVS), a condition that causes sudden fainting due to a rapid drop in heart rate and blood pressure.

Clinical Study and Key Findings

The research involved 132 patients who underwent induced fainting tests. The Galaxy Watch 6 used its photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor and heart rate variability (HRV) data. An artificial intelligence algorithm analyzed this data to predict fainting episodes up to five minutes in advance. The system achieved an accuracy rate of 84.6 percent, according to Samsung.

Vasovagal syncope is common, affecting up to 40 percent of people during their lifetime. About one-third of those affected experience repeated episodes. While fainting itself is not usually dangerous, sudden falls can result in serious injuries such as fractures or concussions. Early warnings could help users avoid these risks by allowing them to sit down or seek help in time.

Implications for Preventive Healthcare

Samsung’s study highlights the potential for wearable technology to shift healthcare from post-care to preventive care. Jongmin Choi, Head of Health R&D Group at Samsung Electronics, stated that wearables could help prevent medical problems before they occur. Professor Junhwan Cho from Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital emphasized that early warnings could reduce secondary injuries by giving patients time to react.

Samsung has not provided a timeline for when this predictive feature will be available to the public. The company plans to enhance the health-monitoring capabilities of its wearables and expand collaborations with medical institutions.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 launched in India in July 2023. It is currently available for Rs 19,999 on Flipkart. The smartwatch runs on Samsung’s Exynos W930 SoC, with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. It features a Sapphire Crystal AMOLED display with Always-On Display support.
