Instagram has launched Instants, a new feature and companion app designed for spontaneous photo sharing. Instants allows users to send unfiltered photos instantly to friends. These photos are ephemeral for viewers, but Instagram saves them in the sender's archive for up to one year. Users can later reshare these photos as a recap to their Stories.
Instants focuses on quick and authentic sharing. When users send a photo, friends can react and reply. Replies go directly to the sender's direct messages, making interactions more immediate and personal. The feature aims to encourage real-time, unedited moments among friends.
The Instants companion app gives users faster access to the camera. This app is available on both iOS and Android platforms. However, Instagram is rolling out the app only in select countries at this time.
Instagram users in supported regions can download the Instants companion app from their device's app store. Once installed, the app integrates with the main Instagram platform. Photos shared through Instants disappear for viewers after viewing, but remain archived for the sender for up to one year. This allows users to revisit and reshare their moments as Stories recaps.
Friends can react to Instants photos with emojis or comments. All replies are sent directly to the sender's Instagram direct messages, streamlining communication. Instagram has positioned Instants as a way to share genuine moments without filters or editing.
The Instants feature is accessible through the main Instagram app and the new companion app. The rollout is currently limited to select countries, with plans for broader availability in the future. Both iOS and Android users in supported regions can access the new feature.
