Oklahoma residents with iPhones and Apple Watches will soon be able to add their driver’s licenses and state IDs to the Apple Wallet app. Apple is currently updating its backend systems to support this feature, according to recent reports. This development follows the passage of a House bill in March, which authorized Service Oklahoma to issue digital or mobile versions of state identification cards and driver’s licenses.
The new digital IDs and driver’s licenses will serve as a companion to physical cards. Residents must still carry their physical IDs, as the digital versions do not replace them. The digital IDs will be accepted at select TSA checkpoints and some business venues. Additionally, users can present them in certain apps that require ID verification for services or purchases.
Oklahoma is not alone in adopting digital identification through Apple Wallet. Several other states are also planning to support this feature. Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Utah, and Virginia are among those preparing for implementation. Utah and Virginia, along with Oklahoma, have already appeared in Apple’s backend systems, indicating progress toward launch.
Currently, the states that have already implemented digital IDs and driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet include Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, and West Virginia. These states allow residents to use digital IDs at select locations and for specific verification needs.
Digital driver’s licenses and IDs offer convenience but do not eliminate the need for physical cards. The digital versions are accepted only at designated locations and for particular uses, such as airport security or app-based verification. Oklahoma residents should continue to carry their physical identification until digital IDs gain broader acceptance.
