The messaging service WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, has announced the addition of two new features that are intended to increase the privacy of public group chats and make it simpler to locate groups that users have interests with. The global rollout of both new features will occur "over the upcoming weeks."
The modifications concern the WhatsApp community tab, which offers group conversations similar to Slack or Discord for huge groups of people (such as businesses and schools) to contain numerous connected sub-groups. The launch of WhatsApp Communities last year allows for up to 5,000 users, 32-person video calls, and group-wide admin announcements.
One new feature will provide WhatsApp group administrators more proactive control over group privacy by letting them choose who is allowed to join their group using an invite link or community. WhatsApp administrators are advised by the most recent FAQ to only share group invitation links with people they can trust because anyone with access to that Site could join.
The other new function attempts to make it simpler for users to locate groups that they share with their mutual contacts. Users can look up a contact's name to view a list of the groups they both belong to, which may come in handy if you forget what the group's name is. Members may also find it helpful to consult the listings of other participants for communities that are more business- or education-focused to make sure they have joined all the appropriate groups.
