Air conditioners rely on the correct refrigerant level to cool homes effectively. Many people believe gas refilling is a routine part of AC servicing, but this is not accurate. Unnecessary gas refills can lead to extra costs and recurring issues. This article explains when AC gas refilling is truly necessary, how to detect leaks, and how to avoid common scams.
The refrigerant in an air conditioner circulates in a closed loop and does not get used up like fuel in a car. If you notice reduced cooling, it usually indicates a leak in the system. Other signs include hissing sounds near the outdoor unit or ice forming on the copper pipes. Leaks can result from damaged coils, loose joints, corrosion, or poor installation.
If your AC takes a long time to cool a room, the refrigerant level may be low and require professional attention. However, simply topping up the gas without finding and fixing the leak is not a proper solution. Some technicians may suggest a refill without addressing leaks, which is a common scam. The refrigerant will escape again if the leak remains, leading to repeated service calls and higher expenses.
To fix the problem permanently, technicians should perform a pressure test to locate leaks. Once the leak is found, it should be sealed before refilling the gas. If your technician claims the gas is empty every year but never checks for leaks, this is a warning sign. You can check refrigerant levels at home and ask the technician to inspect for leaks if you suspect a problem.
Technicians often use soapy water to detect leaks, similar to how tyre punctures are found. They spray soapy water on the suspected area and look for bubbles, which indicate a leak. If no bubbles appear, the system is likely intact. It is advisable to use authorized service centres or trusted companies that offer a warranty on gas refills.
The type of refrigerant needed depends on your AC model. Older units typically use R22, while newer models may require R410A or R32. Using the wrong gas can damage the AC. Only trained professionals should handle AC gas refilling, as refrigerants can be harmful if they come into contact with skin or are inhaled.
The cost of refilling AC gas varies by type and quantity. For older ACs, the cost ranges from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500. For newer models, it can be between Rs 2,500 and Rs 4,000 or more. Additional charges may apply if leak repairs are needed.
