AI Bots Now Dominate Internet Traffic, Cloudflare Reports
Cloudflare data reveals AI bots now account for 57 percent of internet traffic, surpassing human web activity as automated traffic accelerates.

AI bots now generate more internet traffic than humans, according to recent statements from Cloudflare and comments by Elon Musk. Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert revealed that bots accounted for about 57 percent of all internet traffic in April 2026, surpassing human activity. Elon Musk supported these findings, stating that AI-driven internet traffic will soon vastly exceed human usage.

Key Highlights

  • Cloudflare reports AI bots generated 57 percent of internet traffic in April 2026.
  • Non-human traffic could reach 1,000 times human traffic within five years.
  • Humans still account for 65 percent of total web activity, mainly through apps and streaming.

AI Bots Surpass Human Traffic

Cloudflare, a major internet infrastructure company, has observed a rapid increase in non-human internet activity. During an earnings call, CFO Thomas Seifert explained that if current trends continue, non-human traffic could be up to 1,000 times greater than human traffic within five years. He stated, "Humans will be a rounding error on the internet." This shift is not due to fewer humans going online, but rather a significant rise in automated bots and AI agents.

AI agents can process thousands of web pages for a single user request, far outpacing human browsing. For example, while a person might check three websites for a product, an AI agent can scan hundreds in the same time. Tools like OpenClaw allow users to deploy multiple AI agents, further increasing automated web activity.

Rapid Growth of Automated Traffic

Cloudflare had previously predicted that bots would outnumber humans online, but this milestone was reached in April 2026, about a year ahead of schedule. The growth of AI-driven traffic is accelerating as more users and organizations deploy automated agents for various tasks.

Despite bots now dominating HTML-based web traffic, humans still account for about 65 percent of total web activity. Human users remain more active in areas such as mobile app usage and streaming content, like scrolling through social media or using navigation apps. However, bots lead in navigating websites, reading articles, and processing documents.

Implications for Internet Usage

The increase in AI bot activity is changing how the internet functions. Automated agents can perform tasks at a scale and speed that humans cannot match. This trend may impact website management, cybersecurity, and how online services are delivered. Cloudflare and industry leaders will continue to monitor these changes as AI agents become more prevalent online.
