Apple watch

Currently, Apple uses a wide range of display manufacturers; according to reports, Samsung, LG, and BOE made the OLED panels for the iPhone 14s. Gurman predicts that Apple will continue to use other businesses to manufacture its displays, but they will do so in accordance with Apple's plans and requirements rather than those of another company.

It is similar to the company's decision to use its own chip designs instead of Intel in laptops and desktop computers, which resulted in significantly improved performance and battery life. While Apple has full design control, TSMC is primarily responsible for producing those processors.

According to the report, Apple will replace the OLED displays that are currently installed in Apple Watches with microLED screens first, possibly as early as 2024. Given that one of the challenges of microLED is making it small, the only real commercial product using the technology at the moment are Samsung's enormous TVs, like The Wall, that seems like an ambitious goal. However, this action has reportedly been in Apple's plans for some time.

Bloomberg revealed in 2018 that the company was covertly working on proprietary screen technology for the Watch, and in 2014, it announced the acquisition of microLED startup LuxView. Additionally, we learned that the company was developing ultra-thin micro OLED and microLED displays for its augmented reality headset last year.

Additionally, it appears that Apple may be attempting to start small with the technology while making it scalable, similar to what it has done with its in-house chip efforts.

While the Apple Watch sells well, it's not on the same level as the iPhone. By starting small with the Watch, it would give itself time to work out any kinks in its display designs before bringing them to its flagship project. According to Bloomberg, it will be "years" before Apple's displays appear on the iPhone.

Similar to an earlier rumour put forth by display analyst Ross Young, Gurman also claims that the Apple Watch's microLED implementation may be delayed until 2025 rather than 2024.
