In 2020, Agility Robotics initially unveiled the formerly headless Digit, promoting it as beneficial in a variety of sectors including logistics, industrial inspection, and telepresence. The robot is five feet, nine inches tall and stands on two legs since it was designed to work in the same environment and occupy the same amount of space as humans.
The most recent improvements to Digit go beyond aesthetics. According to a business representative, Digit's sensor-equipped head should make it simpler for people to comprehend what it is doing because its eyes "will help convey essential information like changing direction and other actions while at work," the spokesperson adds. Also, it has newly created end effectors, or hands, that should make picking up the plastic totes used in warehouses easier.
Yet for now, Digit's capabilities are still quite constrained. Its primary job is to pick up and place down different kinds of objects weighing up to 35 pounds, yet it can also walk, step up on curbs, crouch, and carry out other straightforward movements. In the company's demonstration videos that were uploaded to Twitter and YouTube, you can see the bot in action as it transfers a bin from a shelf to the conveyer belt.
Agility Robotics is launching its Agility Partner Program, which will "give partners an exclusive opportunity to shape the development of Digit's skills and abilities, and will initially be the only way to purchase the latest generation Digit," though it is unclear how much it will cost the businesses seeking access to the bot.
