Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI and integrated into X (formerly Twitter), has been temporarily blocked in Indonesia and Malaysia. The decision was taken after authorities raised serious concerns over the misuse of its image-editing capabilities, which were allegedly exploited to create sexually inappropriate and non-consensual images.
In Malaysia, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) confirmed the suspension through an official statement shared on X. The regulator stated that the action followed repeated instances where Grok was used to generate pornographic, sexually explicit, and grossly indecent content, including manipulated images involving women and children.
According to the MCMC:
As a result, the regulator moved ahead with a temporary block until adequate safeguards are implemented.
Indonesia followed with a similar move over the weekend. The country’s Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, announced the suspension of Grok to prevent the spread of AI-generated fake pornographic content.
In an official statement, the minister said the ban aims to:
The ministry described non-consensual sexual deepfakes as a serious violation of human rights, dignity, and public safety. Authorities have also asked X to provide an urgent clarification on how Grok’s features work and what safeguards are in place.
The suspensions in Indonesia and Malaysia come amid growing international pressure on X and xAI. Several regions, including the European Union and India, have raised concerns over the lack of strong controls on AI-generated content, especially tools that can be misused to create sexualized deepfakes.
Although X recently restricted Grok’s image-editing feature to verified users, regulators argue that this step does not fully address the core issue of non-consensual image generation.

The temporary bans on Grok in Indonesia and Malaysia highlight the rising regulatory pushback against unchecked AI tools. As governments tighten oversight, xAI and X may face increasing pressure to introduce stronger safety mechanisms before expanding or restoring access to such features globally.
