Google I/O 2026 highlights major advances in Gemini AI models, Android 17 features, and early hardware previews for AI smart glasses and the Googlebook laptop platform.

Google will host its annual developer conference, Google I/O, today, May 19, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. The event is a major showcase for Google, where the company reveals new software features, artificial intelligence updates, and technologies that will impact Android devices, Search, and other services in the coming months.

Key Highlights

  • Google I/O 2026 keynote to focus on AI, Gemini models and Android 17 updates.
  • Event will preview new hardware concepts including AI-powered smart glasses and Googlebook laptop platform.
  • Keynote starts at 10 AM Pacific Time and will be livestreamed on Google’s I/O website and YouTube.

Sundar Pichai will lead the keynote, which is expected to focus on artificial intelligence, Gemini models, and the future direction of Android. While Google I/O has traditionally centered on software, this year’s event may also introduce new hardware concepts, including AI-powered smart glasses.

The keynote will start at 10 AM Pacific Time, or 10:30 PM IST for viewers in India. The livestream is available on Google’s official I/O website and the Google for Developers YouTube channel. The keynote will run for several hours and feature major product announcements, software demonstrations, and discussions about Google’s AI strategy.

AI and Gemini Models Take Center Stage

Artificial intelligence is expected to be the main focus at Google I/O 2026. Google is likely to announce upgrades to its Gemini AI models, which are now integrated across Android devices and Google services. Reports indicate that Google may introduce a new video-generation AI model called Omni.

The company is also expected to highlight improvements to Search powered by AI and provide updates on its experimental Google Labs projects. One anticipated highlight is Flow, an AI-based music creation tool, which may receive new creative features during the event.

Google has started referring to some advanced AI features as “Gemini Intelligence” for premium Android devices. This signals the central role of AI in Google’s overall strategy.

Android 17 and Software Updates

Another major announcement expected at the conference is Android 17. Although still in beta, Google may use the event to preview upcoming features before the official release later this year. Recent announcements about Android 17 include improved voice-to-text recognition, smarter autofill, and enhanced digital well-being settings.

Google is also redesigning aspects of Android Auto and adding more 3D-style emojis. Since many Android features were revealed ahead of the event, industry observers believe Google has reserved significant software updates for the I/O keynote.

Hardware Concepts and New Platforms

Google has confirmed that the event will feature a preview of its smart glasses project, indicating renewed interest in wearable AI devices. Another product likely to be discussed is Googlebook, a new AI-first laptop platform based on Android technologies. Unlike Chromebooks, Googlebook aims to prioritize AI-driven experiences and productivity features.

Details about Googlebook remain limited, but Google may use I/O to explain how these devices fit into its broader AI ecosystem.
