Google has announced a new category of laptops called Googlebooks, focusing on artificial intelligence and the Gemini assistant. The announcement took place during The Android Show: I/O Edition 2026. Googlebooks aim to combine features from both Android and ChromeOS, allowing users to run Android apps natively and access new Gemini AI features. The launch comes nearly 15 years after Google first introduced Chromebooks on May 11, 2011.

Key Highlights

  • Googlebooks combine Android and ChromeOS features with Gemini AI integration.
  • Magic Pointer offers AI-powered suggestions by interacting with on-screen elements.
  • Googlebooks will be available from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo in fall 2026.
  • Devices will feature premium materials and a new signature glowbar.
  • Chromebooks will continue to receive support for their 10-year lifespan.

Key Features of Googlebooks

Googlebooks will feature premium materials, similar to those used in high-end laptops like the MacBook Neo. Each device will include a new signature "glowbar," which will provide additional functionality, though Google has not detailed its full capabilities yet. The laptops are designed to deliver a familiar ChromeOS experience while integrating Android app compatibility and advanced AI tools.

The core of Googlebook is the Gemini AI assistant. One notable feature is the "Magic Pointer," developed with the Google DeepMind team. When users wiggle the cursor on the screen, the Magic Pointer activates and offers AI-powered suggestions. For example, pointing at a date in an email can prompt the setup of a meeting, or selecting two images can help visualize them together. Users can also create custom widgets by giving prompts to Gemini, which can search the internet or connect with Google apps like Gmail and Calendar to build personalized dashboards.

Integration and Availability

Googlebooks will support features such as "Cast My Apps," allowing users to operate smartphone apps directly from their laptop. The "Quick Access" feature enables seamless file transfers from Android devices to Googlebooks, functioning similarly to file sharing between iPhones and Macs.

Google has not announced its own branded Googlebook but confirmed partnerships with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to manufacture the devices. The company expects Googlebooks to be available in various shapes and sizes, with a market launch planned for fall this year.

Google has reassured users that Chromebooks will continue to receive support throughout their 10-year lifespan. However, it remains unclear if new Chromebook models will be released alongside Googlebooks.
