Google is developing a new feature that will allow users to unlock their Pixel Watch using their paired Pixel phone. This update follows the existing Watch Unlock function, which lets users unlock their Pixel phone with a Pixel Watch. The new feature was discovered in the latest Connected Phone & Watch app through code references.
The "Phone to Watch Unlock" feature will enable automatic unlocking of a Pixel Watch when the paired Pixel phone is unlocked. This function is expected to be exclusive to Pixel phone and Pixel Watch combinations. Users will no longer need to enter a PIN or pattern on the watch if their phone is already unlocked.
Proactive notifications may inform users about the feature. Messages such as "Automatically unlock your watch?" and "Unlocking your watch just got easier" could appear when the feature becomes available. This aims to make the unlocking process more convenient for Pixel device owners.
Setting up the Phone to Watch Unlock feature will require a one-time process. Users must enter the watch's PIN or pattern on their phone to establish the trusted relationship. Once set up, unlocking the phone will automatically unlock the connected watch.
If a user upgrades to a new Pixel Watch, the trusted relationship transfers from the old watch to the new one. This eliminates the need to repeat the setup process when switching devices. The feature is designed to streamline access and improve user experience across Pixel devices.
Google has not announced an official launch date for the Phone to Watch Unlock feature. However, the presence of code in the latest app version suggests development is underway. The feature may debut with an upcoming Pixel device release, but Google has not confirmed this timeline.
