Samsung, known for its leadership in foldable smartphones, may be developing a rollable display smartphone. A recently discovered patent filing provides insight into this potential new device. The patent, identified by Wear View, outlines a phone with a rollable screen and a rear camera module that moves as the display expands.
The patent sketches and renders from Wear View show a device with a cutout on the rear panel. This cutout allows the camera module to shift position as the screen extends. When the display is retracted into the main chassis, the device looks similar to a standard smartphone. Once fully extended, the form factor changes, resembling other rollable devices.
The patent also describes sensors integrated into the device. These sensors can detect changes in the display size, as well as shifts in the camera and antenna positions. The sensors would help manage hardware adjustments as the screen moves.
Samsung filed this patent in 2023. The company had previously submitted a patent in 2021 for a device with a display that could expand. While the existence of a patent does not guarantee a product launch, it shows Samsung's ongoing interest in rollable smartphone technology.
The patent suggests Samsung is considering features similar to those found in other rollable devices. However, there is no confirmation that this concept will reach consumers. The filing highlights the company's continued research and development in advanced smartphone displays.
