SpaceX's anticipated initial public offering (IPO) is expected to draw global attention, not just for Elon Musk but also for Antonio Gracias. Gracias, an Indian-origin investor, stands to gain billions due to his early and significant backing of Musk’s ventures. As SpaceX reportedly targets a valuation of up to $2 trillion, Gracias’s financial stake could reach historic levels.
Antonio Gracias has Indian roots through his father, who emigrated from Goa to the United States and became a neurosurgeon in Detroit. His mother, a Spanish pharmacist, managed a pharmacy. Gracias was born and raised in America, where he built a career in finance, law, and investing. He studied international economics at Georgetown University and attended law school at the University of Chicago. He also spent time at Waseda University in Japan and worked with Nikko Securities in Tokyo.
In 1995, while still in law school, Gracias founded MG Capital, which later evolved into Valor Equity Partners. Over time, Valor Equity became closely linked to Elon Musk’s business interests. The firm invested in Tesla and SpaceX, and later became involved with xAI. Gracias joined SpaceX’s board in 2008, a period when private space exploration was considered highly risky by many investors.
IPO disclosures show that Antonio Gracias and Valor Equity control about 7.3% of SpaceX. This makes him the second-largest stakeholder after Elon Musk. If SpaceX reaches a $2 trillion valuation, Gracias’s stake could be worth approximately $128 billion, or about Rs 12.16 lakh crore. This would position him among the world’s wealthiest individuals, largely due to his long-term association with Musk’s companies.
Gracias’s influence extends beyond SpaceX. Valor Equity has supported Musk’s AI ventures, including xAI. According to Bloomberg, Valor Equity arranged financing for xAI’s computing expansion. The firm raised capital to buy AI chips and data-center equipment, then leased these assets back to xAI. These arrangements generated significant revenue, with xAI and related entities reportedly paying hundreds of millions of dollars in lease payments during 2025 and early 2026.
Antonio Gracias exemplifies a different type of billionaire—one who operates behind the scenes. He has played a crucial role in funding and supporting some of the world’s most ambitious technology companies. Gracias’s strategic investments and early support for Musk’s ventures have positioned him for substantial financial gains.
If the SpaceX IPO becomes one of the largest in history, Gracias, the Indian-origin financier from a Goan family, could emerge as a major figure in global technology finance.
