Shivon Zilis has become a central figure in Elon Musk’s ongoing lawsuit against Sam Altman, OpenAI, and Microsoft. The trial focuses on Musk’s claim that OpenAI shifted from a non-profit to a for-profit company. Zilis’s role in the case has drawn attention due to her close personal and professional ties to Musk, as well as her involvement with OpenAI.
Shivon Zilis, now 40, was born in Markham, Ontario, to a Hindu Punjabi Indian mother and a White Canadian father. She attended Unionville High School and played hockey at Yale University, graduating in 2008. Zilis began her career at IBM’s cognitive computing division before joining Bloomberg Beta as a founding member. In 2015, Forbes named her to its "30 Under 30" list for venture capital.
Zilis started working with OpenAI in 2016 as an adviser and later served on its nonprofit board until 2023. Around the same time, she became closely involved with Musk, both professionally and personally. From 2017 to 2019, she worked at Tesla as a project director on the Autopilot and chip design team. She later held the role of director of operations and special projects at Neuralink, another Musk-led company.
Zilis and Musk share a family together. They had twins, Strider Sekhar and Azure, via IVF in November 2021. Their daughter, Arcadia, was reportedly born in mid-2023, followed by son Seldon Lycurgus in late 2024. In total, Zilis and Musk have four children together.
During Musk’s testimony, he first described Zilis as his chief of staff, which he later corrected. He clarified that they live together and that she is the mother of four of his children. This clarification came as the trial entered its third day, highlighting the importance of Zilis’s role in the proceedings.
Zilis’s connection to the trial extends beyond her personal relationship with Musk. Court evidence shows she acted as an intermediary between Musk and OpenAI after Musk left the board in 2018. Messages presented in court suggest she maintained communication between Musk and OpenAI, relaying updates and advice.
In one message, Zilis asked Musk if she should remain close to OpenAI to keep information flowing or begin to distance herself. Musk responded that she should stay close and even try to recruit OpenAI staff to Tesla. Zilis also participated in conversations with OpenAI leaders, including Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Ilya Sutskever. She relayed concerns from OpenAI about control over artificial general intelligence, to which Musk responded sharply.
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, also communicated with Zilis during tense moments with Musk. He sought her advice on how to respond to Musk and whether to make public statements about him. These interactions underscore Zilis’s unique position between both parties.
As the trial continues, Zilis’s testimony is expected to be significant. Her proximity to both Musk and OpenAI places her at the center of the dispute, and both legal teams are likely to focus on her role to support their arguments.
