The DirectSR API is designed to facilitate multi-vendor super resolution by providing a common set of inputs and outputs, allowing game developers to activate various solutions including Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, and Intel XeSS with a single code path. This approach streamlines the development process, eliminating the need for developers to write separate code for each upscaling technology.
The announcement follows the recent discovery of an "Automatic Super Resolution" feature in a Windows 11 test version, which hinted at AI-driven enhancements for supported games. However, Microsoft's latest move indicates that the feature will leverage existing super resolution technologies like DLSS, FSR, and XeSS instead of introducing a standalone solution at the Windows level.
With the DirectSR API, Microsoft aims to empower game developers to harness the capabilities of AI-upscaling technologies seamlessly, enhancing visual fidelity and performance in supported games across a wide range of hardware configurations. This initiative reflects the company's commitment to advancing gaming experiences on the Windows platform and fostering collaboration with leading hardware vendors in the industry.
