Although Samsung was rumoured to introduce something similar to the Galaxy S23 series, that did not happen. However, Samsung has now made a fresh announcement that indicates that this will change for their future offerings.
On Thursday, Samsung revealed that it has obtained technology that will enable direct communication between smartphones and satellites, particularly in remote areas. Samsung's Exynos modems will incorporate this technology, referred to as standardized 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN). Samsung says that its future Exynos modems will support two-way text messaging as well as HD image and video sharing, unlike Apple's technology, which only works for emergency services.
According to Samsung, this new technology will "accelerate the commercialisation of 5G satellite communications and pave the way for the 6G-driven Internet of Everything (IoE) era." Min Goo Kim, executive vice president of communication processor development at Samsung, stated that "Samsung aims to take the lead in advancing hybrid terrestrial-NTN communications ecosystems around the world in preparation for the arrival of 6G."
Samsung has its approach to bringing satellite connectivity to smartphones. The company intends to use satellites and other nonterrestrial vehicles to provide connectivity to remote areas like mountains, deserts, or even the middle of the ocean. Samsung also claims that this technology could be useful in disaster relief efforts and in future urban air mobility like unmanned aircraft and flying cars. However, Samsung has not yet announced when satellite connectivity will be available on its phones, which devices will support it, or whether Samsung will charge for its satellite connectivity services.
