Apple is set to unveil macOS 27 at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8. The update will focus on refining the Liquid Glass design language, which debuted last year and drew mixed reactions from users. Apple aims to address transparency, shadowing, and readability issues that have affected the user experience since the introduction of macOS 26 Tahoe.
The Liquid Glass design language features translucent menus and glass-like interface elements. These elements allow menus and toolbars to partially reveal content behind them, such as desktop wallpapers or website backgrounds. Layered shadows add depth to the interface. While this design has worked well on devices with OLED displays, such as iPhones and Apple Watches, Mac computers with LCD panels have shown less polished effects. Users have reported that transparency and shadow rendering can impact readability, especially in Finder sidebars, Control Centre, and applications with extensive lists.
Apple's upcoming macOS 27 update will not replace Liquid Glass but will refine it. The company plans a "slight redesign" to improve visual clarity and address user concerns. These changes follow feedback from Mac users who found the new textures sometimes hindered usability.
Reports indicate that macOS 27 will include broader software optimisations. These will cover bug fixes, performance enhancements, and improvements to battery life. The update aims to make the operating system faster and more user-friendly, rather than introducing dramatic new features.
In addition to interface refinements, Apple is preparing new artificial intelligence features for macOS 27 and iOS 27. The update is expected to introduce a revamped Siri with chatbot-style interactions, deeper system integration, and stronger links between Siri and Spotlight Search. Apple is also testing new Safari capabilities, including automatic organisation of tab groups.
The refinements in macOS 27 reflect Apple's response to user feedback regarding the Liquid Glass design. By focusing on usability and performance, Apple aims to improve the daily experience for Mac users. The update is expected to be revealed at WWDC in June, with a focus on incremental improvements rather than major visual overhauls.
