Apple is preparing for its annual September event, where it is expected to unveil the next generation of iPhones. Alongside this, new reports indicate that Apple is considering significant changes to its Apple Watch lineup. According to Bloomberg, the company is exploring new Apple Watch models, including options that may not feature a display at all. This shift comes as screenless fitness trackers, such as Whoop, gain popularity among consumers.
Since the launch of the Apple Watch Ultra in 2022, Apple’s smartwatch lineup has seen only incremental updates. Improvements have included better water resistance, cellular connectivity, and satellite support. However, the core design and concept have remained largely the same. Despite this, Apple Watch sales have continued to grow, even as competitors like Samsung have experienced declines, according to Counterpoint Research.
The Bloomberg report suggests that Apple is evaluating changes across its entire smartwatch range. These changes could include more affordable models beyond the current SE, as well as premium options above the Ultra and Hermes editions. Apple is also considering devices without displays or with different screen types and sizes. Although there are rumors about a round display, such a design is unlikely to reach the market soon.
Apple introduced the first Apple Watch over a decade ago, offering a distinctive square design and a new user interface. In recent months, Apple’s industrial design team has been exploring various directions, influenced by the rise of smart rings and screenless fitness bands. These alternatives are often lighter, less expensive, and more convenient for users.
In addition to new form factors, Apple is reportedly working to make its wrist-worn devices more AI-centric. This includes integrating advanced Siri AI features and enhancing health tracking capabilities. The company also plans to update the Health app, now overseen by Eddy Cue, who took responsibility for the area last year and is known to be interested in products like Whoop.
Despite ongoing development, Apple is not expected to introduce a major redesign for the Apple Watch in the immediate future. The upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are expected to feature performance improvements, new color options, updated bands, and enhanced health and fitness features. A ceramic case option could also return this year.
Apple is likely to announce the Watch Series 12 and Watch Ultra 4 at its September event, alongside new iPhone models and possibly the iPhone Fold. However, a complete overhaul of the Apple Watch lineup is not anticipated at this event.
