Samsung S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max are arguably the best phones you can buy from their respective platforms, but which one is best for you?

Apple vs Samsung is a rivalry that has been going on for more than a decade. Each year both the companies release their flagship phone in the hope to outperform each other, the silver lining of this battle has to be the amazing products users get to choose from.

Design

iPhone 13 Pro Max features a minimal design, with a 0.25 mm increase in the thickness, a slightly larger camera bump and a smaller display notch, it looks identical to its predecessor. Dimension: 160.8 x 78.1 x 7.7 mm Build: Stainless Steel frame, Gorilla Glass front and back Samsung completely changed the design of its 2022 flagship. S22 Ultra follows the design language of previous Note devices. Compared to the iPhone, S22 Ultra features sharper corners and curved sides. Being the top of the line devices from their respective brands, it should be no surprise that both the S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max have amazing designs. Due to the sharp edges, the iPhone feels a little bit uncomfortable to hold for a long time when compared to S22 Ultra.

Winner: Samsung S22 Ultra

Display

iPhone 13 Pro Max features a 6.7” (1284x2778) OLED display with ProMotion, a first for any iPhone, dubbed Super Retina XDR. S22 Ultra features a slightly larger 6.8” (1440x3088) Dynamic AMOLED curved display running at 120 Hz.

It is a difficult task to find any flaws in the display of either device, the iPhone outputs more true-to-life colours whereas S22 Ultra covers more DCI P-3 colour space. Both the displays are best in class when viewed individually but when compared side by side, S22 Ultra edges ahead with higher brightness and more punchy colours.

Winner: Samsung S22 Ultra

Specification

iPhone 13 Pro Max is powered by Apple’s in-house A15 SoC paired with 6 GB of RAM. S 22 Ultra is powered by the latest snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC paired with 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM

On paper, the S22 Ultra with its octa-core design and more RAM easily beats the iPhone whereas according to benchmarks iPhone 13 Pro Max is usually victorious. Though benchmarks do not provide the complete picture and neither of the two devices show signs of slowing down even when pushed to their limits, the extra headroom provided by the A15 chipset in the iPhone 13 Pro Max will be the better bet if you are planning to use your device for more than a few years. spe.jpg

Camera

iPhone 13 Pro, on the back, has a 12 MP main camera, a 12 MP 120° ultrawide and a 12 MP 3x telephoto camera. On the front, there is another 12 MP selfie camera. S22 Ultra flaunts a whopping 108 MP primary camera along with a 12 MP 120° ultrawide and two 10 MP telephoto cameras with 3x and 10x optical zoom.

With more megapixels and a bigger sensor, S22 Ultra captures more details in daylight, with its 10x zoom camera, the S22 Ultra also wins when taking pictures of objects at a distance. When it comes to low light situations, even though S22 Ultra produces brighter images the overall quality and details of the image coming from the iPhone 13 Pro Max are superior. Transitions between the different focal lengths are much smoother on iPhone when compared to S22 Ultra. S22 Ultra can record videos at 8K resolution, this is more of a gimmick rather than being a feature. On the other hand, iPhone 13 Pro Max can record ProRes videos which might be useful for a small number of people. iPhone 13 Pro Max is still the king when it comes to video capabilities.

Winner: Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max

Battery Life

iPhone 13 Pro Max is powered by a 4352 mAh battery with the support of 20 W fast charging. S22 Ultra is powered by a 5000 mAh battery with the support of 45 W fast charging.

The battery life of a device depends on many variables other than the raw mAh size of the cell. Even with an approx. 13% smaller battery, iPhone 13 Pro Max lasts longer when compared to the S22 Ultra. Samsung S22 Ultra does offer a faster-charging speed of up to 45 W compared to the 20 W of the iPhone.

Winner: Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max

Software

iPhone 13 Pro Max comes with iOS 15. S22 Ultra comes with android 12 with OneUI 4.1 on top.

Android gives its user more features and customization in the UI. OneUI is also more optimized to work on a larger display. On the other hand, iOS is not much optimized for a large phone but at the same time developers usually spend more time and resources when making apps for iOS, therefore apps look and perform better on an iPhone compared to an Android device, moreover iOS also has a better ecosystem with other Apple products when compared to S22 Ultra.

Miscellaneous

One of the bonuses you get if you choose the S22 Ultra is the stylus support which is absent on the iPhone. Other than the obvious use cases like drawing or taking notes, the S-Pen can also be used as a remote for the S22 Ultra during presentations or for acting as a shutter button in the camera app. No matter how you look the S-pen offers functionality that the iPhone just cannot match.

If you want a top-tier phone but don't want to play finger gymnastics, the iPhone is also available in a smaller footprint, the iPhone 13 Pro, which does not skip any feature from its bigger brother, whereas if you choose the smaller S22 or the S22+, you lose the S-Pen and also lose certain camera features from the S22 Ultra.

Conclusion

It is always hard to compare phones from different ecosystems, there is no clear answer to which phone is superior. If you are looking for a device which you can customize to your heart's content or just want the phone to have hundreds of quirks, S22 Ultra should be your choice. Whereas if you are looking for a fast and premium phone which you can always rely on or if you are a part of or planning to get into the Apple ecosystem, there is no better device than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
