The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the latest addition to Samsung's high-end Galaxy series and is the only Samsung phone with an S Pen. It boasts several enhancements over the S22 Ultra, such as a 200-megapixel primary camera and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.
Furthermore, it features a large and stunning display, various One UI functionalities, and a 5,000-mAh battery. Although it comes at a steep price, it's an excellent option for those who want the best of the best.
After using the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra for a week, this review covers its performance in everyday usage, battery life, and stunning display, along with the massive 200MP main camera.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra launched in India for the price of Rs 124999 for the base model with 256 GB of storage and goes to Rs 154999 for the top-of-the-line variant with 1 TB of storage.
The Samsung flagship is available in four colour options: Green, Phantom Black, Lavender and Cream.
When I first saw the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, I noticed how much it resembled the Galaxy S22 Ultra. However, this year's model has a flatter display and edges, giving it a boxy appearance.
The phone is quite sizable and weighs in at around 234 grams. Despite its weight, it still fits comfortably in my pocket. However, after extended use, my hands could feel the heft.
The back of the phone features just lenses without a camera island, which are slightly larger than before and protrude a bit. The back panel has a matte finish and is made of glass, while the frame is solid and sturdy aluminium.
I was delighted to learn that the S23 series is the first to include Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, and it also has an IP68 rating, allowing me to take a 30-minute dip with the phone. The build quality is fantastic, and I give it a big thumbs up.
Samsung has always been known for its amazing displays, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra is no exception. The phone boasts a gorgeous QHD+ 6.8 inch AMOLED display, which is the same as its predecessor but still stunning nonetheless.
With a 120Hz refresh rate and 1750 nits of peak brightness, the display is bright and vibrant, and I had no problems using it even in direct sunlight. The adaptive refresh rate is a nice feature that saves battery life, by adjusting the refresh rate according to the usage.
The display is perfect for daily use and media consumption, with punchy colours and deep blacks. It's incredibly sharp and everything looks crystal clear. Whether you're watching videos or playing games, the S23 Ultra's display will definitely provide the best experience.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra runs on a modified version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and is paired with a whopping 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.0 internal storage. During my usage, the phone felt incredibly fast and responsive in day-to-day use. Apps opened up instantly and switching between them was seamless. The 12GB RAM proved to be more than enough for multitasking and running apps simultaneously in the background.
I put the phone through some intensive tasks, like gaming and video editing, and it performed without any hiccups. Even while recording 8K footage, the phone handled everything smoothly.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset can run any game on the Play Store on the highest settings, and I tried out a few like Apex Legends, Asphalt 9, and Genshin Impact. All the games ran on their highest settings without any lag or frame drops. It's clear that Samsung has done an exceptional job with the chipset, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra provides the best performance you could ask for.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with One UI 5.1, which is based on the latest Android 13. As an Android user, I was able to easily navigate through the UI and was impressed with the smooth animations and responsiveness. There are plenty of customization options available, including the ability to change the lock screen clock and notification layout.
One of my favourite features of the S23 Ultra is the S Pen. It allows you to take quick notes and write on the locked screen, which is incredibly convenient. Samsung has also promised the longest commitment to software updates in the industry, with four years of major OS updates and five years of security updates.
Another feature I love is the Samsung DeX system. It allows you to connect your phone to an external display or monitor and gives you a PC-like experience. This is a game-changer for anyone who needs to work on the go or wants to turn their phone into a mini-computer. Overall, the S23 Ultra offers a lot of functionality and features that make it a joy to use.
I have to say, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra's camera system is nothing short of impressive. With a quad-camera setup on the back, you can expect nothing but the best. The 200MP main camera captures shots that are incredibly detailed and sharp, even when zooming in. The colours are vibrant and the dynamic range is impressive.
One of my favourite features of the camera is the portrait mode. The edge detection is spot on, and the subject is well separated from the background. The colours are also natural and pleasing to the eye.
The ultra-wide lens does a fantastic job capturing shots with plenty of detail and a warm tone. The selfies are also great, even though the megapixel count has gone down. The skin tones look natural and the dynamic range is impressive.
When it comes to video, the S23 Ultra can record up to 8K at 30fps. The footage is incredibly clean and detailed. Even in low light, the colours look great. Overall, Samsung has done an amazing job with the camera system, especially with the video capabilities of the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
In terms of battery life, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has made significant improvements in battery optimization even though the battery capacity remains the same as last year. As a casual user, I found that the battery easily lasted for a full day with around 40% battery still remaining for the next day.
For heavy users, the phone can easily last through an entire day without needing a charge. However, the battery life will vary depending on usage. Personally, I was able to get about 6 hours of screen time.
While the phone does come with 45W fast wired charging and 15W wireless charging support, I must admit that it falls short compared to other flagship phones on the market. It's high time for Samsung to offer better charging speeds for their premium devices.
Also, it's worth noting that the phone does not come with an adapter in the box, so you will have to purchase one separately. With the adapter, you can fully charge your phone from 0 to 100% in less than an hour. Alternatively, a 25-minute charge would give you around 50% battery life.
If you're on the hunt for a top-of-the-line Android phone, I highly recommend checking out the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. It's definitely a bit of an investment, but in my experience, it's well worth it for the incredible camera, speedy performance, and reliable build quality.
One thing I really appreciate about this phone is how seamlessly it handles everyday tasks and even more demanding applications like gaming. You won't have to deal with any annoying lag or slow loading times.
And speaking of the camera, it's truly top-notch. I've taken some of my favourite photos with this phone, and it's consistently reliable in a variety of lighting conditions.
Battery life is also impressive, so you won't have to worry about constantly searching for a charger.
Of course, if you're an Apple fan, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is always an option. But if you prefer the flexibility and feature-packed experience of Android, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is definitely the way to go. And the user interface is top-notch, too.
