Sunbird has launched an Android app that enables users to access iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS in one place. The app aims to address ongoing interoperability issues between major digital platforms. While Apple devices now support RCS, iPhone users still see RCS messages as green bubbles. Some features, such as reactions, replies, and group chat functions, do not work seamlessly with RCS. Sunbird offers full iMessage chat support on Android without requiring extra hardware.
The Sunbird app is available for download and operates as a paid service. Users receive a 14-day free trial. After the trial, the app costs $2.99 per month or $24.99 per year. This is an increase from the previous price of $1.99 per month. According to the company, 33% of installs started the free trial, and 8% converted to paid subscriptions. The app was previously in a closed beta phase.
Sunbird emphasizes message encryption on user devices. Messages are not stored on Sunbird servers longer than necessary for delivery. However, the company has faced security concerns in the past. In 2023, Sunbird partnered with Nothing to launch a Chats app. This app was quickly suspended due to privacy concerns, leading to a period of inactivity. Sunbird has since reworked its app and relaunched it as an open beta.
The latest version of Sunbird introduces a two-tab system for sorting messages. The Primary tab contains conversations with frequent contacts. The Secondary tab holds one-off messages, such as verification codes and messages from unknown numbers. This feature aims to help users manage their messages more efficiently.
Sunbird plans to expand its app to support WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger chats. The company states that this integration is in late-stage development and is expected to launch in the third quarter, by the end of September. This addition would allow users to manage all major messaging platforms within a single app.
Artificial intelligence features are also in development. Sunbird Intelligence will provide on-device chat summaries to help users keep up with busy conversations. An on-device assistant will be able to perform simple tasks, such as writing replies to messages. These AI features are scheduled for release in the third quarter as well.
Sunbird’s approach reflects ongoing efforts to improve messaging interoperability and user experience on Android devices. The company continues to address security and privacy concerns as it expands its feature set and platform support.
