In the cutthroat Android smartphone market of today, differentiating yourself is difficult. The premium segment is crowded with options, and the mid-range segment is also crowded. In light of this, TECNO, a company well known for its low-cost CAMON series of smartphones, has introduced the Tecno Phantom X2 to the Indian market as the Phantom X's successor. High-end consumers are the target market for the premium flagship from the TRANSSION subsidiary's Tecno brand.
The Tecno Phantom X2 price in India starts from Rs 39999 for the only variant with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of Storage.
The phone is available in two eye catching colours which include the Stardust Grey and the Moonlight Silver.
The Tecno Phantom X2 falls into the premium range price category, which is unknowable by others just by looking at it. Because of the massive camera island that is located in the middle, it has Tecno Phantom X2 Pro-like aesthetics. The matte finish and sprinkled texture on the back of the Stardust Gray colorway keep fingerprints and smudges at bay while feeling silky smooth.
At the bottom, there is the visually appealing text "PHANTOM." A comfortable grip is provided by the back and front panels' tapered sides, which nearly meet the metal frames' "unibody double-curved design," as described by Tecno. It reminds me of the Vivo X60 Pro and feels upscale when in the hand. It's not too heavy either at 203g. However, because of that camera island, the weight distribution is off.
The Tecno Phantom X2 has a stunning 6.8-inch 120Hz AMOLED curved display for its screen. The maximum brightness of this display is 710 nits. The display is sufficiently bright for outdoor use, and we had no problems with visibility.
Gorilla Glass Victus is used as its covering for ingress protection. There are two colour settings available: Bright colours and Original colours. However, this display accurately and vividly reproduces colour.
Because Phantom X2 is Widevine L1 certified, other OTT streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime can provide HD quality for you to enjoy your binge sessions. Despite being a flagship, it lacks the HDR certification, which is disappointing because the processor can support it. It has three modes for setting the refresh rate: Auto switch, 60 Hz, and 120 Hz.
The Mediatek Dimensity 9000, a 4nm-based chip with 5G future-proofing, is a feature of the Tecno Phantom X2. This chipset offers best-in-class performance and can easily compete with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
Mali-G710 MC10 is in charge of the graphics. It offers 256GB UFS 3.1 storage, 8GB LPDDR5 RAM, and a clock speed of up to 3.05 GHz. Daily performance felt quick and light; it can handle all the horsepower without degrading the drive.
We didn't experience any lags or slowdowns while using the system while playing demanding games like Genshin Impact or Call of Duty: Mobile. While playing Genshin Impact for an hour, the device felt a little warmer, but this in no way affects the performance.
The device's temperature reached almost 39°C while running the Antutu benchmark, which is acceptable. In terms of benchmarks, it achieves 3690 Multi-Core Score, 1213 Single-Core Score, and 870758 Antutu Benchmark. It was throttled down to 79% of its maximum performance during the CPU test.
On the software front, the Tecno Phantom X2 comes pre-installed with Android 12 and HiOS 12 with a custom skin. The OS is a little out of date, but the company has teamed up with Google to promise software updates, and it will soon get Android 13. It includes several unique features, such as Voice Changer, Video Beauty, Whatsapp Voice Recorder, Peek Mode to read deleted Whatsapp messages, sticker maker, etc. to provide more insight into this OS.
The triple camera array on the Tecno Phantom X2 consists of a 64MP primary sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 2MP sensor with an LED flash. It includes a 64 MP selfie camera with OIS on the front of its optics.
Pictures taken with its 64MP Primary sensor have a polished appearance, a lot of fine details, and a skew of colour desaturation to keep them looking natural. You can see this desaturation when it's dark outside. The dynamic range is generally excellent, and the contrast levels are also sufficient. The camera occasionally performs poorly in full-resolution and night modes.
Although it doesn't have a standalone telephoto camera, it does let you take digital zoom pictures using a regular camera. With the same colour science, the "2x zoom" appears identical to the "1x photo." The results look aggressively soft and have fewer details after a zoom of up to 10x, but they can still be used in a variety of situations. The night mode is disappointing; it produces a worse photo than the normal mode and has a shutter count of almost 6–8 seconds. It occasionally functions perfectly well.
Additionally, it enables 64MP photography using Quad-Bayer pixel binning, which captures a great deal more detail than typical 16MP images. Edge detection and background separation in Portrait mode are excellent, and there is just the right amount of background blur, which works well with both living and non-living subjects.
The 13MP Ultra-wide uses the same camera sensor as the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro, which is its larger sibling. Photos taken with the Phantom X2 consistently and faithfully reproduce natural colours. Its 13MP Ultra-wide camera produces photos with colours that are true to life, and the colour science is the same for both lenses. Software processing softens the edge distortion, which is to be expected.
The Tecno Phantom X2's primary camera can record videos at a maximum resolution of 4K@60 frames per second. However, only the selfie camera can shoot at 1080p@60fps, while the ultrawide lens can only do so at 30fps. Both the selfie and ultrawide cameras are only capable of 1080p resolution. While the lack of optical image stabilisation (OIS) may be disappointing, electronic image stabilisation effectively stabilises video footage, with the exception of a slight focus hunting issue under certain conditions.
A massive 5,160mAh battery with a 45W fast charging system is built into the Tecno Phantom X2. The all-day battery poses no issues whatsoever. It easily accommodates 6-7 hours of screen time, which consists of a reasonable hour of gaming, two hours of binge-watching, and an additional hour of using social media apps.
It takes 19 minutes for this 45W fast charger to charge a device from 0% to 50%, but it took us 67 minutes to charge it from 0% to 100%. But it doesn't support wireless charging, which is what distinguishes a flagship from other devices.
After the Tecno Phantom X, the Tecno Phantom X2 is the company's second attempt to compete in the flagship market. It features the most recent Mediatek Dimensity 9000, a simple and distinctive back design, a 120Hz curved OLED display, a solid collection of hardware, a subpar camera setup, and a good battery backup with fast charging.
With less bloatware than usual, the HiOS 12 has been improved, and the user interface is intriguing. The single bottom-firing speakers are still difficult to accept in a flagship, and there are some omissions to make it available at a competitive price point, such as average low-light camera performance and lack of wireless charging.
