Anthropic has introduced invisible watermarks to all content generated by its Claude AI models. This move aims to meet transparency requirements under Article 50 of the European Union's AI Act. The company updated its support page to detail how these machine-readable marks will identify AI-generated text and files, even though users cannot see them.
For text, supported Claude models embed an invisible watermark directly into the content. This watermark remains even if users copy and paste the text into other documents. It may also persist through some editing. Anthropic states that the watermark does not alter the meaning or quality of the AI's response.
For files such as .svg, .png, and .jpg, Claude attaches signed provenance metadata. This metadata follows the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) open standard. The metadata records information about the file's origin and can indicate if the file has been tampered with. A signed metadata label signals that Claude processed the file and helps track changes.
The introduction of watermarks has led to mixed reactions online. Some users expressed dissatisfaction and considered cancelling their subscriptions. Others welcomed the change, noting it could encourage more transparency about AI use. Several users pointed out that those upset may have relied on undisclosed AI-generated content.
Anthropic is developing tools to help users and third parties detect Claude's embedded watermarks and provenance metadata. These tools will check if a text or file carries a Claude mark, as required by EU law. The company plans to share more details about detection mechanisms soon.
However, the system has limitations. Detection of a mark only signals that Claude may have processed the content. It does not prove full authorship or provenance. Content may be marked even if Claude was used only for proofreading, translation, or summarization. Marked content can also be modified or combined with other material after processing. The absence of a mark does not guarantee that content was not AI-generated. Marks may be missing if content comes from older models, has been heavily edited, or is mixed with other writing.
The watermarking applies to output from supported Claude models worldwide. This includes Claude Platform, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag, as well as through cloud partners like AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry. All new Claude models will mark AI-generated content from launch. Existing models released before August 2, 2026, are still being updated to support marking. Anthropic notes that the law allows a transition period for these earlier models.
Anthropic is not alone in adopting watermarking systems. Google DeepMind's SynthID also embeds invisible watermarks in AI-generated content. SynthID creates a detectable pattern during token generation, even if the text is edited or rewritten. However, detection may not work for very short text snippets.
