Apple has reached a significant milestone in India, reporting annual sales exceeding $10 billion for the first time. This figure covers the 12-month period ending in March and marks a rise from $9 billion in the previous fiscal year. Compared to three years ago, Apple’s sales in India have grown by 67%.

Key Highlights

  • Apple's annual sales in India surpassed $10 billion for the first time in the latest fiscal year.
  • Sales in India grew 67 percent over three years, driven mainly by iPhone, iPad, and MacBook demand.
  • Apple produced 55 million devices in India last year, up from 36 million the previous year.
  • India may extend tax exemptions on manufacturing equipment and components to 2041.

Sales Growth and Contributing Products

The majority of Apple’s revenue in India came from its iPhone lineup. However, the company also experienced increased demand for iPads and MacBooks, according to an industry insider. Despite this growth, India remains a smaller market for Apple compared to China. In China, Apple recorded $18.8 billion in sales over just a three-month period, although this was slightly below analysts’ expectations of $19.6 billion.

The $10 billion sales figure in India is notable, especially considering several challenges. The Indian rupee declined by 10% against the US dollar since the start of 2025, which negatively affected pricing. Additionally, local taxes contribute to higher retail prices. For example, the base iPhone 17 sells for the equivalent of $870 in India, while the same model costs $799 in the United States.

Strategies to Boost Sales

Apple has implemented several strategies to encourage purchases in India. The company collaborates with banks to provide credit card rebates. It also offers significant student discounts and trade-in programs for older devices. These efforts appear successful, as reflected in the latest sales results.

Manufacturing Expansion in India

Apple has worked for years to diversify its manufacturing operations, which were once entirely based in China. While China remains the primary manufacturing hub, recent developments show a shift. In March, reports indicated that Apple produced an estimated 55 million units in India over the past year. This is a substantial increase from 36 million units produced the previous year.

India’s government is considering extending tax exemptions on manufacturing equipment and component imports until 2041. These exemptions were originally set to expire in 2031. The policy applies to components used for manufacturing devices intended for export outside India. This move supports Apple’s goal to establish India as a key manufacturing center for the global market.
