Apple has seen unprecedented demand for its new MacBook Neo in 2026. The company launched the affordable laptop earlier this year, and it has quickly become one of Apple's top-selling devices. Apple is now working to increase production as demand continues to surpass expectations.
During Apple's April earnings call, CEO Tim Cook described customer response to the MacBook Neo as "off the charts." He acknowledged that Apple underestimated how popular the device would be. Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple has doubled its shipment forecast for 2026. The company now expects to ship 10 million units, up from its original estimate of 5 million.
This increase marks a major shift for a product initially seen as a budget experiment. According to Cook, the MacBook Neo has attracted a record number of first-time Mac buyers. Apple is currently facing supply constraints, with shipping estimates extending to several weeks in some regions as it works to meet demand.
The MacBook Neo's popularity is largely due to its price. In the United States, the laptop starts at $599. Students can purchase it for as low as $499. In India, the device is priced at Rs 69,900, with select offers reducing the effective price to about Rs 57,900. This makes the MacBook Neo the most affordable MacBook Apple has ever released.
Despite its lower price, the MacBook Neo offers features important to everyday users. It runs on the A18 Pro chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro series. The device is suitable for web browsing, productivity, content consumption, and light creative work. It features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with up to 500 nits of brightness, 8GB of unified memory, 256GB of SSD storage, and up to 16 hours of battery life.
Apple has also introduced a youthful design for the MacBook Neo. The laptop is available in several colors, including Citrus, Blush, Indigo, and Silver. Each finish comes with a matching keyboard.
Ming-Chi Kuo believes the MacBook Neo's success highlights current trends in the PC market. In a recent post, Kuo stated that consumers are not primarily buying laptops for on-device AI features. Instead, they continue to prioritize price, design, portability, and integration with the Apple ecosystem.
Kuo noted that most users access AI services through cloud-based platforms like ChatGPT. Heavy computing tasks are handled remotely, not on the device itself. He also mentioned that affordable mini PCs are gaining attention for running AI agents around the clock, but these agents also rely on cloud inference.
Kuo concluded that widespread adoption of on-device AI will depend more on operating systems and software experiences than on hardware specifications alone.
