Apple has announced a series of new environmental initiatives in India. The company will invest Rs 100 crore to expand renewable energy capacity in the country. This move aligns with Apple's global goal of becoming carbon neutral across its entire operations by 2030.

Key Highlights

  • Apple will invest Rs 100 crore to expand renewable energy in India.
  • Partnership with CleanMax targets over 150 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity.
  • Initiatives aim to power 150,000 Indian households annually and reduce plastic pollution.
  • Apple is supporting six green startups through grants and mentorship programs.

Renewable Energy Expansion

Apple is partnering with CleanMax, a renewable energy developer, to create over 150 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity in India. According to Apple, this energy will be enough to power nearly 150,000 Indian households each year. The company indicated that this partnership could expand further in the future. Previously, Apple and CleanMax collaborated on rooftop solar projects for Apple’s offices and retail stores in India.

Sarah Chandler, Apple’s vice president of Environment and Supply Chain Innovation, stated that environmental commitment drives innovation at Apple. She emphasized the company’s pride in investing in India’s clean energy sector and protecting natural resources.

Plastic Waste Reduction Efforts

In addition to renewable energy, Apple is working to reduce plastic pollution in India. The company has partnered with WWF-India to support recycling and waste management projects. These projects aim to improve the collection, sorting, and recycling of plastic waste. The goal is to prevent plastic from entering local ecosystems and to enhance overall waste management infrastructure.

Support for Green Startups

Apple is also supporting green entrepreneurship in India. Through a partnership with Acumen, Apple will provide catalytic grants to six startups. These startups focus on areas such as waste management, regenerative agriculture, and the circular economy. The program offers mentorship, strategic guidance, technical assistance, and network access. Apple aims to help social entrepreneurs validate business models and scale their impact.

These initiatives form part of Apple’s broader strategy to advance sustainability and environmental responsibility in India. The company continues to invest in projects that support clean energy, reduce waste, and foster innovation among green startups.
