According to a report from the Financial Times, Apple's CEO Tim Cook and head of operations Jeff Williams wanted to introduce the AR/VR headset as soon as possible, despite objections from the design team who wanted to delay the launch to create a thinner, lighter, and more powerful product in the future. Although a thinner and lighter headset would have been ideal, it would have taken years to develop, potentially causing Apple to miss out on the AR/VR market.

The Reality Pro may be bigger and more expensive than an ideal headset, potentially costing around $3,000. However, it will give Apple insight into the market and user requirements, allowing them to build better products in the future. The headset is rumoured to include advanced technology such as dual 4K OLED screens and an independent processor, potentially becoming Cook's second significant product release after the Apple Watch.
As the leader in the consumer VR segment, Apple will have to compete with products like the Meta Quest series. Cook has confirmed his intention to step down from his role as Apple's Chief before the end of the decade, making the Reality Pro potentially his final major product release.
