Aptoide has announced that its specialized games app store, Aptoide Games, is now approved for distribution on Google Play in the United States. This development follows Google's recent legal defeat in the Epic Games lawsuit, which required Google to permit third-party app stores on its platform.
The Epic Games lawsuit against Google led to a significant change in Google Play's policies. As part of the court ruling, Google must now allow third-party app stores to be distributed through its own marketplace in the US. Following this, Google introduced the Third-party App Store on Play Program, which enables approved third-party app stores to appear on Google Play.
Aptoide Games is among the first, and possibly the very first, third-party app store to take advantage of this new program. Previously, users who wanted to install Aptoide Games needed to visit the Aptoide website, download an APK file, enable installation from unknown sources, and complete the installation manually. This process was more complex and less secure for many users.
With the new approval, Aptoide Games can now be downloaded directly from Google Play in the US, just like any other app. This change simplifies the process for users and increases the visibility of Aptoide Games. It also signals a potential shift in the app store landscape, as other third-party app stores may soon follow Aptoide's example and seek approval under the same program.
Industry observers expect that, in the coming months, Google Play could host several competing app stores. This would mark a notable change, as Google Play has traditionally restricted such competition on its platform.
The new policy currently applies only within the United States. In other regions, Google is not required to allow third-party app stores on Google Play. Instead, Google continues to support a system where users can download third-party app stores from their respective websites. For verified and trustworthy app stores, Google has simplified the installation process outside the US, but these stores are not available directly through Google Play in those markets.
The approval of Aptoide Games on Google Play in the US may encourage other developers to pursue similar distribution strategies. The situation remains dynamic, and further changes to app store policies could occur as the market adapts to new legal and regulatory requirements.
