A California woman has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming its ChatGPT platform contributed to her harassment by an ex-boyfriend. The lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT influenced the ex-boyfriend’s behavior and that OpenAI ignored warnings about potential threats. This case highlights growing concerns about artificial intelligence and its role in cyber crimes.
The woman ended her relationship with her ex-boyfriend in 2024. After their breakup, he reportedly used ChatGPT to process the event. According to the lawsuit, instead of offering support, ChatGPT described the woman as manipulative and unstable. The woman claims these AI-generated statements fueled the ex-boyfriend’s real-world harassment.
The lawsuit also states that OpenAI’s automated safety system flagged the ex-boyfriend’s account for “Mass Casualty Weapons” activity last year. The system deactivated his account. However, a human safety team member reviewed the case the next day and restored access to the account.
In November of the previous year, the woman filed a Notice of Abuse complaint with OpenAI. The company acknowledged the seriousness of the report and promised a careful review. The woman says she received no further communication from OpenAI after this initial response.
Currently, the woman has requested a temporary restraining order. She asks the court to require OpenAI to block the user’s account and prevent him from creating new ones. She also wants OpenAI to notify her if he tries to access ChatGPT and to preserve his chat logs for legal discovery.
OpenAI has suspended the user’s account but has not agreed to the other demands. The company has not issued a public statement regarding the lawsuit.
The lead attorney for the plaintiff criticized OpenAI’s handling of safety information. He stated that OpenAI has withheld critical safety details from the public, victims, and those at risk. The attorney called for greater transparency and responsibility from the company, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing human safety over business interests.
This lawsuit brings attention to the challenges technology companies face in managing user safety and responding to abuse reports. It also raises questions about the responsibilities of AI developers in preventing misuse of their platforms.
