China has introduced a national digital identity system for humanoid robots. The system assigns a unique 29-digit identification code to every AI-powered robot made in the country. This digital ID acts as a passport, tracking each robot from production to retirement. The initiative aims to improve oversight and traceability in the fast-growing humanoid robotics sector.
The new system, called the Humanoid Full Lifecycle Management Service Platform, covers every stage of a robot's existence. Each robot receives a unique code that follows it through manufacturing, sales, deployment, maintenance, recycling, and disposal. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology manages the initiative through its Humanoid Robotics and Embodied Intelligence Standardization Committee.
The 29-digit code is divided into four parts: a two-digit country code, a four-digit manufacturer code, a six-digit product model code, and a unique 17-digit serial number. This structure ensures that every robot has a distinct digital identity. The ID allows authorities, manufacturers, and users to track a robot's location, maintenance history, and eventual fate.
The system aims to address safety, governance, and accountability challenges in the robotics industry. By recording key information about each robot, the platform supports better monitoring of safety risks and helps identify faulty products. It also assigns responsibility if problems occur during a robot's lifecycle.
The framework applies to all participants in the humanoid robotics ecosystem. This includes manufacturers, sellers, service providers, users, and recycling companies. The new rules introduce a "no code, no market access" policy. Robots cannot be sold or deployed in China without registration in the system. Companies must also issue recalls if common defects are found. Refurbished robots made from scrapped units cannot return to the market.
China has already started rolling out the system. Reports indicate that over 100 Chinese humanoid robot manufacturers have joined the platform. More than 28,000 robots across 200 different models now have digital identities. The initiative is expected to support the wider deployment of humanoid robots across various industries while ensuring safety and accountability.
