Google announced a significant upgrade to its search box at the I/O 2026 conference, marking the largest change in over 25 years. The new search experience is powered by AI Mode, which currently serves over one billion monthly users. This upgrade introduces a more intuitive and dynamic search box, now available globally as the default model.

Key Highlights

  • Google launches major AI-powered search box upgrade at I/O 2026.
  • New search box supports text, images, files, videos, and Chrome tabs as inputs.
  • AI-powered search agents and booking features expand for Pro and Ultra users this summer.

AI-Powered Search Features

The reimagined search box uses artificial intelligence to anticipate user intent and provide suggestions that go beyond traditional autocomplete. Users can now input queries using text, images, files, videos, and even Chrome tabs. This expanded functionality aims to make searches more precise and relevant.

The intelligent search box is rolling out today in all countries and languages where AI Mode is available. Users can engage in conversational searches, asking follow-up questions directly from an AI Overview. This feature is accessible on both desktop and mobile platforms worldwide.

New Search Agents and Expanded Capabilities

This summer, Google will introduce search agents for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. These agents will operate continuously in the background, helping users find information and stay updated on important topics. For example, users searching for apartments can specify their requirements, and the agents will monitor listings and send notifications when matches are found.

Agentic booking capabilities will also expand in the United States this summer. Google will support a broader range of tasks, including booking local experiences and services. The system can even call businesses on behalf of users for select categories such as home repair, beauty, or pet care.

Global Rollout and Integration

The upgraded search experience is expanding to nearly 200 countries and territories, supporting 98 languages. No subscription is required for access. Users can connect additional Google services, including Gmail and Google Photos, with Google Calendar integration coming soon.
