Apple is preparing to introduce a new addition to its iPhone lineup with the expected release of the iPhone 17 AIR, a device that is said to break all records and push all boundaries. Expected to be unveiled at Apple's annual hardware event alongside the iPhone 17 models.
According to leaks, reports, and insight from noted analyst Ming-chi Kuo, the iPhone 17 Air could measure just about 5.5 mm in thickness, making it the thinnest iPhone ever and slimmer than rival the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, which measures 5.8 mm. If the updates are accurate, this will be Apple's slimmest device.
This iPhone's 6.6-inch ProMotion OLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, a feature reserved for Apple's pro-level iPhones, will set it apart. If the leaks hold true, this will be the first time Apple offers a high refresh rate panel on a non-pro iPhone. Some leaks also suggest that some models may include 90 Hz variants.
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be powered by a binned version of the A19 Pro chipset, which is said to be the same silicon as the iPhone 17 Pro models but with one CPU core disabled. With this strategy, Apple may be able to provide excellent performance while controlling heat in an extremely thin frame. According to rumors, the iPhone 17 Air will feature a single 48-megapixel Fusion camera on the back, similar in power to the primary camera on the iPhone 16 series. A 24-megapixel selfie camera, which is expected to be standard in the iPhone 17 lineup, may be visible to users on the front.
Apple is reportedly planning to incorporate its proprietary C1 modem into the iPhone 17 Air as part of its ongoing push for in-house hardware. The C1 was first introduced with the iPhone 16e, and it aims to reduce Apple's reliance on third-party modem suppliers while improving 5G connectivity and efficiency.
The iPhone 17 Air, which will fall between the regular iPhone 17 and the Pro models, is anticipated to be released on September 19, 2025. It is aimed at customers who value sleek design without sacrificing performance, and it is expected to replace Apple's "Plus" model.
All eyes are on Apple as it prepares to push the boundaries of smartphone functionality and design, with additional leaks expected in the coming weeks.
