iPhone 18 OLED Requirements Could Sideline BOE

According to a Weibo post by tipster Instant Digital, Apple has reportedly set “unprecedentedly high” light transmittance requirements for the iPhone 18’s OLED panel. These standards are said to be far beyond what Apple currently uses, making it difficult for Chinese display maker BOE to meet them.

For comparison, recent iPhones like the iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 offer:

• 1,000 nits typical brightness
• Up to 1,600 nits HDR brightness
• iPhone 17 reportedly reaches 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness

Since BOE managed to meet these specs in the past, the new leak suggests the iPhone 18 could push brightness even further.

Samsung Display Likely to Benefit

A separate report from South Korea adds weight to the rumor. It claims BOE is facing ongoing manufacturing issues with its OLED production lines, affecting panels supplied for recent iPhone models.

Due to these quality concerns, Apple has reportedly shifted millions of display orders to Samsung Display, which is expected to remain the primary supplier for future iPhones, including the iPhone 18.

BOE’s role—especially in supplying iPhones for the Chinese market—could shrink further if these issues continue.

iPhone 18: What Else Is Expected?

Apart from the brighter display, the iPhone 18 is rumored to include:

• Apple’s next-generation A20 chipset
• New C2 modem
• A simplified camera control system

The standard iPhone 18 is expected to launch in early 2027, while the iPhone 18 Pro series is likely to arrive earlier, around Q3 2026.
