A Reddit user has reported the first known case of a hardware failure affecting Apple's proprietary C1X 5G modem in the iPhone Air. The issue surfaced in a thread on r/iPhone, where user u/itstheskylion described waking up to complete loss of cellular reception ("no cellular network").
The user ran Apple's built-in Mobile Diagnostics, which flagged a hardware problem disrupting cellular performance. Diagnostics prompted checking component condition and contacting support.
The user did not specify AppleCare+ coverage. It remains unclear if the issue qualifies under Apple's standard one-year warranty.
The iPhone Air, marketed as Apple's thinnest iPhone ever, launched alongside the iPhone 17 series in September 2025.
Apple positions the C1X for improved networking speeds and power efficiency compared to prior generations.
This appears to be an isolated case, as no other widespread reports of C1X modem failures have emerged since the iPhone Air's launch about five months ago.
The incident draws attention to Apple's shift from Qualcomm modems to in-house designs. Apple plans to use the C1X in additional models, including the rumored low-cost iPhone 17e expected to launch March 4.

Affected users should contact Apple Support for diagnostics and potential repair. Monitor forums like Reddit's r/iPhone or MacRumors for any additional similar reports. Apple has not issued an official statement on this case.
