If you've had your eye on the iPhone Duo, here's some news that's going to test your patience. Analyst Jeff Pu, who's usually plugged into Apple's supply chain, now puts 2026 production at around 6 million units, down from his earlier estimate of 7 million.
It's the hinge. Again. Honestly, at this point it feels like the hinge has become its own little subplot in the iPhone Duo story. The mechanism is a genuinely difficult piece of engineering — more moving parts, tighter tolerances, way more room for something to go wrong when you're trying to build it by the millions — and it sounds like Apple, or whoever's handling manufacturing for it, still hasn't quite figured out how to make enough of them fast enough. Which, to be fair, tracks with what we'd already been hearing: earlier reports had already called out the hinge as the weak link here.
And look, it's worth being clear about what this isn't. It's not a sign that nobody wants the phone. If anything, it's kind of the opposite problem — Apple could probably sell more of these than it's currently able to build, which is a strange spot to be in, but not exactly a new one for a first-generation product with genuinely new mechanics.
To put 6 million in perspective: Pu also expects Apple to sell around 72 million iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units combined by the end of the year. That's... not a small gap. Put those two numbers side by side and the iPhone Duo stops looking like a flagship launch and starts looking a lot more like a limited-run product — the kind of thing that plays out closer to how early Vision Pro supply went than a typical iPhone release.
None of that should come as a huge shock, really. New hinge designs just don't scale the way a normal iPhone upgrade does, and Apple's shown time and again that it would rather roll something out slowly than push it out the door before it's ready.
Pre-orders are expected to open October 16. And given how tight supply is looking, this really isn't the kind of launch where you can afford to be casual about it.
