The company also announced a change in accounting for data center leases, extending the period from 15 to 25 years. This adjustment lowers reported annual capital expenditure, but Microsoft stated its actual spending plans remain unchanged. The company forecasted reported capital expenditure of $50 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 and $175 billion for calendar 2026. Both figures are below market expectations, with the 2026 estimate lower than Microsoft’s previous projection of $190 billion.

AI Initiatives and Super App Development

Satya Nadella revealed that Microsoft is developing an AI super app, integrating various Copilot experiences into a single interface. This move aims to expand Copilot beyond a chatbot, combining features such as the Copilot chatbot, GitHub Copilot coding assistant, Copilot Cowork, and Autopilot system. The super app would allow users to access multiple AI tools in one place, similar to combining ChatGPT with a coding assistant.

Nadella emphasized that Microsoft is becoming more independent in AI model development and hardware, moving away from reliance on OpenAI. Microsoft was an early investor in OpenAI and still holds an equity stake. The company reported that paid seats for M365 Copilot reached 30 million, up from 20 million in the previous quarter, indicating rising adoption of AI tools among enterprise customers.
