Motorola's rollable phone concept features a 5-inch screen that expands to 6.5 inches when unfolded. This makes it more compact than the iPhone 13 Mini in small mode, and almost as big as the iPhone 14 Pro Max when fully unfolded.
The announcement comes after Motorola unveiled its third-generation Razr in China in August. Prolific Smartphones leaker Evan Blass had previously reported that Motorola was in the early stages of developing a rollable smartphone.

Motorola's approach to rotatable smartphones is unlike some of the other concepts we've seen. For example, companies like Samsung and TCL have developed a concept device with a screen that expands horizontally instead of vertically to switch between smartphone and tablet modes. But Motorola's concept isn't so much about developing a smartphone/tablet hybrid as it is about offering a smartphone that can change its screen size depending on the situation.
But in the same way companies like Samsung introduced the concept of foldable smartphones years before the first Galaxy Fold came out, it would be a while before we could buy a rollable smartphone. It will take time. But Ross Young, co-founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, believes rollable products can address some of the shortcomings of today's large-format foldable products like the Galaxy Z Fold series.
"I think the rollable concept has a lot of potential to replace that book-type device in my mind because it's going to be a lot thinner," he said in a previous interview. "And it should be a lot lighter."

Motorola's first foldable Razr got a lot of attention when it launched in 2019, but Samsung is the industry leader when it comes to foldable phones. According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung held a 62% share of the global foldable smartphone market, while Huawei held second place with 16%. The same report also suggests that the foldable smartphone market is expected to grow by 73% in 2022, with consumers becoming more receptive to smartphones with screens that bend, fold, and eventually roll. suggests that it may be easier.
