Anthropic has hired Nobel Prize-winning scientist John Jumper, marking a significant talent shift in the AI sector. Jumper, who led the AlphaFold project at Google DeepMind, announced his move after nearly nine years at the company. His departure follows another high-profile exit from Google, as AI engineer Noam Shazeer recently joined OpenAI.
John Jumper shared news of his transition on X, stating he would join Anthropic after a short break. Jumper thanked Google DeepMind and CEO Demis Hassabis for the opportunity to lead AlphaFold just six months after completing his PhD. He credited the team for teaching him about conducting impactful scientific research.
Jumper and Hassabis were awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on AlphaFold. The AI system predicts the three-dimensional structure of proteins from their amino acid sequences. This technology has provided predictions for all 200 million known proteins, including those from plants, animals, and microorganisms. The breakthrough has accelerated biological and medical research by reducing the time needed for protein structure analysis.
Demis Hassabis responded to Jumper’s announcement on X, expressing gratitude for their partnership. Hassabis highlighted AlphaFold’s global impact and its demonstration of AI’s potential in science and medicine.
Jumper’s departure is the second major loss for Google’s AI teams in recent days. Noam Shazeer, a leading AI engineer, left Google for OpenAI after the company reportedly spent over $2 billion to rehire him. These moves come as Google faces increased competition from Anthropic and OpenAI in developing advanced AI products, including coding tools.
According to Bloomberg, former employees reported that Google has struggled to sell its AI coding tools to business customers. Some DeepMind staff have also raised concerns about the lack of clear business solutions in this area. The recent departures may add to the pressure on Google as it competes for top AI talent and innovation.
Major tech companies, including Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, are intensifying efforts to recruit leading AI researchers. The competition for talent extends beyond the United States. For example, China’s Deepseek recently advised investors not to recruit its engineers, highlighting the global demand for AI expertise.
At the time of writing, details about John Jumper’s specific role or start date at Anthropic remain undisclosed. His leadership on the AlphaFold project has already made a lasting impact on the scientific community, and his move signals ongoing shifts in the AI talent landscape.
