To be fair, OnePlus had already promised two years of OS updates and upgrades for the OnePlus 7, 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T, and 7T Pro, which the company has now delivered. The most recent version for these devices is OxygenOS 12, which they recently received.
Even though you have the option to install custom ROMs to get the newer versions, OnePlus has been slack with its software strategy, at least for the older models. However, when consumers are choosing their next phone, they always prefer to receive official updates. Companies like Samsung have adjusted their strategies and now provide their models with more comprehensive software coverage. Although the OnePlus 7 series is dated, providing two years' worth of software updates is not ideal.

The brand will change starting in 2023, but those who previously purchased products from the business will feel betrayed. We are unsure if they will continue to use the OnePlus family for their upgrades or look at other brands that have a more specialised approach to software. While the 7T series came out with OxygenOS 10 out of the box, the OnePlus 7 launched with OxygenOS 9 version.
The last update for these phones was OxygenOS 12, which means that the older model received an extra year of updates. This is probably because the company was concerned about user backlash because the mid-year T upgrade was only 6 months older than the stock OnePlus 7 series.
Recent attempts by OnePlus to abandon its mid-year flagship strategy have failed, and the company now prefers to offer a standard model and a Pro variant, similar to other manufacturers in the market. Despite this, we did see the OnePlus 10T debut in 2022, and the OnePlus 11 5G is planned to combine both this year. The new OnePlus 11 5G will be released by the company in India next month, and we hope to hear more about it soon.
In other news, OnePlus is expected to launch its flagship, the OnePlus 11 in the coming month of February in India.
