Qualcomm Replacement: Apple's 2025 Target Might Face Setback

Apple's aim to switch from an iPhone modem purchased from Qualcomm to an internal one may take longer than planned, since the company's replacement is expected to take several years to come to completion. This calls into question Apple's schedule as well as its capacity to become independent on outside vendors. This project has been the focus of Apple staff' efforts since 2018.

It is believed that Apple's internal modem chip development, which was originally scheduled for early 2025, will now take place in late 2025 or early 2026. This follows the extension of a contract with Qualcomm that guaranteed access to Qualcomm's modems for iPhone models going forward. Apple's objective of having less reliance on outside suppliers and more autonomy is being challenged by this delay.

The 2019 acquisition of Intel's modem division caused a delay in Apple's plans to produce a new modem processor for iPhones. The 5G modem, which was supposed to be available for iPhones by 2020, could not be ready until 2026, highlighting the difficulties in achieving technological independence in the development of iPhone modems.

Because Apple's 5G modem isn't compatible with short-range millimeter wave bands and has to respect Qualcomm's patents, it could not perform as well as Qualcomm's. This makes Apple's hunt for an in-house modem more difficult and calls into question the company's ability to compete in the rapidly developing 5G market.

Due to its achievement in creating its own modem chip, Apple may have an advantage over other producers. Apple has encountered difficulties during the development process, even though it has designed mobile CPUs for a variety of devices. It is anticipated that the technology will debut on Apple's low-cost smartphone, which may be the iPhone SE's replacement.
