Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently compared his child's first two-word sentence to a major AI achievement. On X, Altman shared that his older child combined two words for the first time. He said this event amazed him as much as when GPT-5.6, OpenAI's latest model, discovered new mathematics.
Altman and his partner, Oliver Mulherin, welcomed their first child, a son, in February 2025. Although they have not publicly announced the birth of a second child, Altman's reference to an "older kid" suggests a new addition to their family. Forbes previously reported the couple expected another child this year.
OpenAI released the GPT-5.6 models last month as part of a restricted preview. This release followed a request from the US government. The new model is currently available to select companies only. There are rumors that OpenAI may expand access to all users later this week.
Altman described GPT-5.6 as a significant advance in both capability and pricing efficiency. He did not specify what mathematical discoveries the model achieved. However, he indicated that the breakthrough was as impressive to him as his child’s early speech.
Altman’s comments drew mixed reactions online. Some users expressed excitement about the potential of GPT-5.6, especially with its rumored wider release. One user noted that Altman’s comparison raised expectations for the model’s future capabilities.
Other users questioned the appropriateness of comparing a child’s development to artificial intelligence. Some found the comparison unsettling, while others joked about using a child’s milestones as AI benchmarks. One user humorously referenced Altman’s approach, saying, “Baby spoke for the first time, Sam: ‘here's the benchmark on the XYZ scale of Baby vs GPT-5.6.’”
Earlier this year, Altman addressed concerns about the energy required to train AI models. He compared it to the energy needed for human development. He stated, “People talk about how much energy it takes to train an AI model. But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human. It takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart.”
Altman has also spoken about parenting and technology. He has said he does not want to raise an “iPad kid” and prefers his child to play outdoors. OpenAI recently announced new AI models named Sol, Terra, and Luna. However, the US government has blocked their wide release for now.
