Sony has announced it will end production of physical disc games for new PlayStation titles starting January 2028. After this date, all new games released on PlayStation consoles will only be available digitally. Players can purchase these games through the PlayStation Store or as digital codes from other retailers. This change will not affect games released before January 2028, which will still be available in physical form.
Sony cites changing consumer preferences and broader industry trends as reasons for this move. The company states that most PlayStation users now prefer buying games digitally. This shift follows Rockstar's earlier announcement that Grand Theft Auto VI will be a digital-only release. Sony's decision marks a significant change for the gaming industry, where physical media has been a core feature since the early days of consoles.
Physical discs have allowed players to own, share, and resell games. Retailers could also discount physical copies, making games more affordable for some buyers. However, physical media has posed challenges for publishers and platform owners. Once a game is sold physically, it can be shared or resold without generating further revenue for the publisher or platform.
With the end of physical media, players will lose the ability to own a tangible copy of their games. Digital purchases depend on the continued operation of online stores. If a platform owner shuts down a store or removes a game, players may lose access. Sony has acknowledged this risk by announcing the discontinuation of the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita this year. While existing purchases can still be downloaded, Sony only guarantees this "for the foreseeable future." The lack of a clear timeline raises concerns about long-term access to digital games.
Over the years, publishers have reduced the value of physical discs by releasing incomplete versions that require online downloads. This has pushed more players toward digital purchases. Despite efforts to preserve physical media, the majority of buyers now choose digital formats. On PC, digital distribution has been standard for years, partly due to piracy concerns. Console gaming has followed this trend, with platform owners controlling game distribution and pricing.
The move to digital-only releases limits options for sharing, reselling, or buying used games. It also reduces opportunities for discounts outside official stores. As Sony leads this shift, other major console makers like Microsoft and Nintendo may follow. The industry appears to be moving toward a future where physical media for games becomes obsolete.
