OpenAI plans to release its first hardware device, a screen-less smart speaker, according to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The device is designed for home use and features a rechargeable battery, making it easy to move between rooms. OpenAI aims to unveil the speaker later this year, with a public release scheduled for 2027.
The smart speaker will control smart home appliances, play media, answer questions, and respond to messages. It will include ChatGPT as its core feature, using an advanced version of the ChatGPT voice mode. This allows users to have natural, back-and-forth conversations with the device. Users can interrupt the speaker, and it can also interrupt users, creating a more dynamic interaction.
Over time, the speaker will become more personalized as it learns from user interactions. It will gain context about individual preferences and habits, allowing it to anticipate needs and provide information proactively. OpenAI believes the device's main appeal will be its personality and its ability to connect with users on a humanlike level.
The speaker will feature mechanical elements that move independently, giving the impression that it is alive rather than a passive object. This design aims to make the device feel like a physical representation of ChatGPT. The device will also include a camera and additional sensors to help it understand its surroundings and the user's context.
This product is the first to emerge from OpenAI's acquisition of Jony Ive's io Products. Ive's design studio, LoveFrom, is involved in the project. Many former Apple designers and engineers, who previously worked on products like the iPhone and Mac, are contributing to the development of the speaker.
OpenAI plans to unveil the smart speaker later in 2024. The device is expected to become available to consumers in 2027. This timeline reflects the company's focus on design, functionality, and integration of advanced AI capabilities.
