The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new Aadhaar mobile app, replacing the older mAadhaar app. The new app prioritizes privacy, faster verification, and user control over personal data. UIDAI confirmed that the mAadhaar app will soon be discontinued, urging users to transition to the updated platform.
The new Aadhaar app, introduced in January 2026, is part of the government’s digital identity initiative. It aligns with the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act and data minimisation practices. The app allows users to verify their identity using QR codes, Face ID authentication, and consent-based data sharing. This approach reduces the need to carry physical Aadhaar cards or submit photocopies for verification.
Unlike the previous app, the new platform does not automatically display the full Aadhaar number or all personal details during verification. Users can select which information to share, enhancing privacy and security. The app supports various scenarios, such as hotel check-ins, hospital visits, age verification, and service partner onboarding, by limiting unnecessary data exposure.
UIDAI has announced through its official X account that the mAadhaar app will be discontinued soon. Users are encouraged to download the new Aadhaar app from the Play Store or App Store. The onboarding process includes selecting a preferred language, entering the Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and completing Face Authentication. Users then create a six-digit PIN and can enable biometric unlock for added security. After adding Aadhaar details and completing OTP verification, the account becomes active.
The app introduces QR code-based verification, allowing users to share identity information without revealing full details. This system works offline, so internet access is not always required. Face authentication is now available for identity checks and proof of presence, providing a stronger alternative to OTP-based verification.
The app enables users to share only specific details, such as name, age, address, or photo, instead of the complete Aadhaar profile. For example, during hotel check-ins, the app can confirm identity without exposing the Aadhaar number. Users can instantly lock or unlock Aadhaar biometrics, including fingerprint, iris, and face authentication, directly from the app, reducing misuse risks.
The app also provides an activity log, allowing users to track where and when Aadhaar authentication was used. This feature increases transparency and helps monitor suspicious activity. Up to five Aadhaar profiles can be managed on a single device, making it easier for families to maintain multiple profiles linked to one mobile number.
Users can update their mobile number and address through the app, reducing reliance on physical Aadhaar centres. UIDAI plans to add more update-related services in the future.
UIDAI has extended the free online Aadhaar document update service. Users can update identity and address documents free of cost through the myAadhaar portal until June 14, 2027. This extension follows the previous deadline of June 15, 2026.
The new Aadhaar app aims to minimize long-term storage of Aadhaar details by third parties. Masked verification options are available, allowing users to hide Aadhaar numbers during sharing. The app is designed for everyday scenarios, including hotel check-ins, hospital verification, cinema bookings, and gig worker verification.
