AI Tool Costs Surge as Top US Power Users Triple Token Spending Since January
Data from the Ramp AI Index reveals that the top 1% of US companies spent $7,400 (around ₹7 lakh) per employee on AI tools in July, driven by token-based billing and rising business adoption.

AI tool expenses for companies are rising, with the top 1 percent of US firms now spending about Rs 7 lakh per employee. According to Ramp’s AI Index, the median AI spending for these companies reached $7,400 (around Rs 7 lakh) per employee last month. This marks a significant increase from January, when the top 1 percent spent $2,590 (about Rs 2,47,500) per employee.

Key Highlights

  • Top 1 percent of US firms spend Rs 7 lakh per employee on AI tools.
  • Median AI spending across all companies is $11.95 or about Rs 1,140 per employee.
  • Anthropic leads US business AI adoption at 43.5 percent, followed by OpenAI at 39.7 percent.
  • Companies like Uber, Amazon, and Walmart have capped employee token usage to control costs.

AI Spending Trends and Company Responses

The report highlights that AI costs have surged as providers like Anthropic and OpenAI moved to a per-token pricing model. In this system, companies pay based on the number of tokens their employees use. As a result, higher usage leads to higher costs. To manage these rising expenses, some large companies, including Uber, Amazon, and Walmart, have imposed limits on employee token usage.

AI spending varies widely across companies. While the top 1 percent spend $7,400 per employee, the top 10 percent spend $650 (about Rs 62,000) per employee. The overall median spending is much lower, at $11.95 (approximately Rs 1,140) per employee. This data shows a growing gap between firms heavily investing in AI and those using it more cautiously.

AI Adoption and Market Share

The report also examines which AI providers are most popular among US businesses. Anthropic leads with a 43.5 percent adoption rate, followed by OpenAI at 39.7 percent. SpaceXAI, led by Elon Musk, holds a 4 percent share. Additionally, model-serving platforms that offer access to open-source AI models are gaining traction. Their share among AI-using businesses rose to 6.1 percent in July.

Despite the rise of open-source platforms, spending on major providers like OpenAI and Anthropic remains strong. However, the report suggests that companies with heavy AI usage are increasingly mixing in more affordable open-source options to control costs.

Industry Reactions and Future Outlook

The rapid increase in AI tool spending has drawn attention across the tech sector. Some executives have noted that AI compute costs now exceed employee costs for certain teams. The widening gap between high and low AI spenders may shape future technology adoption and budgeting strategies.

As AI becomes more integrated into business operations, companies continue to seek ways to balance innovation with cost control. The trend of rising AI expenses is likely to remain a key issue for organizations adopting these technologies.
